Water can cure everything

MEDIUM:
Performance including zinc bucket and cotton towel
Water can cure everything is a durational performance that explores historical treatment methods used in psychiatric institutions.
The audience is asked to repeatedly douse the artist with cold water from a 5 meter high platform. After a self-determined period of time, the audience steps down from the platform and can use a towel.
The site-specific performance is based on historical documents about the former use of hydrotherapy at the Königin Elisabeth Herzberge Klinikum in Berlin: Patients spent up to 14 hours in zinc tubs in a specially built bathhouse. Hydrotherapy was used in early 20th century psychiatry both therapeutically and as a means of restraint. Severe shocks to body and psyche were to be induced. The durational performance explores this tension between coercion and care in psychiatric treatment.
