Rats make sixteen different sounds to express happiness in a frequency undetectable to the human ear. They name each other and play social games according to rules which they express with sounds, as their existence is mostly lived in darkness. Hauksdóttir has created a score for human voices based on the rats’ social dynamics, sonographic images of rat sounds and human phonetics, thus assembling the Rat Choir.


The Rat Choir was first performed in Reykjavik in 2020 and has been on display in various forms: in Reykjavik Art Museum 2020, Mala Voadora in Porto 2020, Municipal Gallery of Porto 2021, the National Gallery of Iceland 2022, and at the House of Collection in Reykjavik in 2023.

For one evening in Changing Room, under the “More-than-human: Music from other species” series, there will be a new assembly and a new performance with new participants.
With the sonographic iconography as a backdrop, twelve people vocalize twelve rat-calls in an arrangement based on social dynamics of rats.
 
The performance begins at 8PM.
